Blurb:

In the darkest places, even love is deadly.

Sixteen-year-old Juliet Moreau has built a life for herself in London-working as a maid, attending church on Sundays, and trying not to think about the scandal that ruined her life. After all, no one ever proved the rumors about her father's gruesome experiments. But when she learns he is alive and continuing his work on a remote tropical island, she is determined to find out if the accusations are true.

Accompanied by her father's handsome young assistant, Montgomery, and an enigmatic castaway, Edward-both of whom she is deeply drawn to-Juliet travels to the island, only to discover the depths of her father's madness: He has experimented on animals so that they resemble, speak, and behave as humans. And worse, one of the creatures has turned violent and is killing the island inhabitants. Torn between horror and scientific curiosity, Juliet knows she must end her father's dangerous experiments and escape her jungle prison before it's too late. Yet as the island falls into chaos, she discovers the extent of her father's genius-and madness-in her own blood.

Inspired by H.G. Wells's classic The Island of Dr. Moreau, The Madman's Daughter is a dark and breathless Gothic thriller about the secrets we'll do anything to know and the truths we'll go to any lengths to protect.

My Review:
**3 Stars**

Ok, so now I have to go and read The Island of Dr. Moreau. Talk about creepy at points. I really enjoyed the story line and how the world was build. I'm just not so sure on the characters.

There were times when I liked Juliet, and times when I didn't. Mostly, I wanted to yell at her and tell her to open her eyes. But... Love is blind. Edward was interesting. I wondered at one point about who he was and had thought... maybe... but then changed my mind (you'll understand if you read it - don't want to give a major spoiler away). Hmm... Montgomery. While I like him when he is with Juliet, I don't like him for what he has done when he isn't with her. He seems really selfish and, while concerned for Juliet, not concerned for the right reasons.

It was a decent read and one I would recommend for lite-thriller fans. I will be reading the next book.

Blurb:

Sybella arrives at the convent's doorstep half mad with grief and despair. Those that serve Death are only too happy to offer her refuge-but at a price. The convent views Sybella, naturally skilled in the arts of both death and seduction, as one of their most dangerous weapons. But those assassin's skills are little comfort when the convent returns her to a life that nearly drove her mad. And while Sybella is a weapon of justice wrought by the god of Death himself, He must give her a reason to live. While she discovers an unexpected ally imprisoned in the dungeons, will a daughter of Death find something other than vengeance to live for?

My Review:
**4 Stars**

Like Grave Mercy, Dark Triumph started out a little slow. I thought I wasn't going to like it as much as Grave Mercy, but I actually liked it better. I love how it picked up right before the last book ended. It was the perfect timing and I didn't feel like I missed anything from Sybella's POV when Grave Mercy took place.

Sybella is such a strong character. She has so much in her past that has hardened her, yet she keeps going. Ahh, Beast. He is a wonderful character. I really liked him in the last book and am so very glad we saw a lot more of him in this one. We also really get to see why he hates d'Albret so much.

I am a little nervous about the next book, I'm just not sure about the character. Honestly, I'd love to continue on with Sybella's story. A really good read - highly recommended, especially if you liked Grave Mercy.

Blurb:

Does Tucker Pierce have what it takes to be a hero when the U.S. military quarantines his island?

Fourteen-year-old Tucker Pierce prefers to fly under the radar. He's used to navigating around summer tourists in his hometown on idyllic Pemberwick Island, Maine. He's content to sit on the sidelines as a backup player on the high school football team. And though his best friend Quinn tells him to "go for it," he's too chicken to ask Tori Sleeper on a date. There's always tomorrow, he figures. Then Pemberwick Island is invaded by a mysterious branch of the U.S. military called SYLO. And sitting on the sidelines is no longer an option for Tucker, because tomorrow may never come.

It's up to Tucker, Quinn, and Tori to uncover the truth about the singing aircraft that appears only at night - and the stranger named Feit who's pushing a red crystal he calls the Ruby that brings unique powers to all who take it. Tucker and his friends must rescue not just Pemberwick Island, but the fate of the world - and all before tomorrow is too late.

My Review:
**4.5 Stars**

Yahoo! One of the rare books written from a guy's perspective. I always find these refreshing as most YA books are written from a girl's perspective. SYLO really keeps you guessing right up to the end. You think you know what is going on... but do you really? More information pops up throughout the book that makes you question what you thought you knew.

The characters were all well written. At times it was hard to remember that Tucker was only 14 years old. He acted more like a 16 or 17 year old with a lot of the decisions he had to make. The only part I didn't find really believable was the parents of the island kids. For the most part they didn't seem to care where their kids were and what they were doing.

I really look forward to the next book and finding out more about SYLO and who they are fighting. Highly recommended.

Review ~ The Iron Traitor by Julie Kagawa (ARC)

The Iron Traitor (The Iron Fey: Call of the Forgotten #2)

Blurb:

In the real world, when you vanish into thin air for a week, people tend to notice.

After his unexpected journey into the lands of the fey, Ethan Chase just wants to get back to normal. Well, as "normal" as you can be when you see faeries every day of your life. Suddenly the former loner with the bad reputation has someone to try for-his girlfriend, Kenzie. Never mind that he's forbidden to see her again.

But when your name is Ethan Chase and your sister is one of the most powerful faeries in the Nevernever, "normal" simply isn't to be. For Ethan's nephew, Keirran, is missing, and may be on the verge of doing something unthinkable in the name of saving his own love. Something that will fracture the human and faery worlds forever, and give rise to the dangerous fey known as the Forgotten. As Ethan's and Keirran's fates entwine and Keirran slips further into darkness, Ethan's next choice may decide the fate of them all.

My Review:
**4 Stars**
I received an eGalley from the publisher via NetGalley for an honest review.

Julie Kagawa... how dare you end the book like that! I was reading into the wee hours to finish the book and ended up waking my husband up with my sobbing. It just isn't right. Deep breaths... ok... next book please.

Normally Julie's books rate around a 4.5 for me, but I did have a few more problems with this book than her others. The first thing was that The Iron Traitor was very Keirran heavy. Even though it was from Ethan's perspective, Keirran seemed to take center stage. I wasn't a huge fan of Keirran in the last book, and this one didn't improve my opinion of him. I actually didn't like him in this book at all. The way I saw it was - Keirran is human, Summer Fey, Iron Fey, and Winter Fey - what side is going to win out in the end???

As always, I LOVE Ethan. Ethan is definitely book-boyfriend material. He is written perfectly and I wish we saw a little more of his and Kenzie's relationship. I also wish there was more Razor, Grim, and Puck (my favorites aside from Ethan).

Oh boy - the prophecy. This is what had me sobbing at the end of the book and the drama throughout just kept building up. I cannot wait for the next book (even though I am still mad at Julie for the ending of this one), and hope everything works out a little better (ok, a LOT better).

Blurb:

Sixteen-year-old Julia Corona is a Daughter of Fate, destined to travel through time to battle the creatures of Mythos who seek to change history. Julia would rather use her powers to ditch PE than fulfill her duties as the Daughter of Present, but her best friend Angie, the Daughter of Past, can't stand the thought of their magic fading away, which is what will happen if they can't find the third Daughter soon.

Then they discover the Daughter of Future is Kaitlyn, the bullying bad girl who tried to steal Angie's boyfriend. Suddenly a world ruled by demons doesn't seem so bad as compared to being magically bound to Kaitlyn for the rest of their lives.

Julia is ready to kiss the magic goodbye until she meets Ethan, an intense young man who claims to be her protector and seems to know Julia better than she knows herself. He looks at her with a strange mix of longing and resentment that Julia can't explain. Before she gets a chance to solve the mystery, the creatures of Mythos strike, opening a portal in Revolutionary France.

The Daughters of Fate must set aside their differences and band together with Ethan to travel back in time to close the portal, but someone close to them will betray them, making their task nearly impossible. The history books are changing, and it may already be too late.

My Review:
**3 Stars**
I received a copy of this book for an honest review as part of this blog tour.

Timespell is written from three different perspectives - Julia, Angie, and Kaitlyn. I'm not normally a fan of jumping books, but the author did a good job with this one. We really did need all three perspectives to get the full picture of what was going on. Although, there were some confusing parts and the ending was really confusing. I'm not quite sure what happened, but I am guessing more will be explained in the next book.

I liked Angie's character the best. She isn't the typical cheerleader that you hear/read about. she is petite and a very nice person. Kaitlyn is what you think of when you think typical cheerleader. She is the popular girl who lords it over everyone. I just couldn't tell if we were supposed to hate her (like I did), or because of one chapter, if we are supposed to feel bad for her. You get a glimpse as to why she is the way she is, but then with everything she does after you forget it.

Good time traveling book. Will be reading the next one. Recommended for transition from Middle-Grade to Young Adult age group.

Review ~ Mystic City by Theo Lawrence

Mystic City (Mystic City #1)
by Theo Lawrence
YA Sci-fi Dystopian
Published: October 9th 2012
Goodreads Link

Blurb:

Aria Rose, youngest scion of one of Mystic City's two ruling rival families, finds herself betrothed to Thomas Foster, the son of her parents' sworn enemies. The union of the two will end the generations-long political feud-and unite all those living in the Aeries, the privileged upper reaches of the city, against the banished mystics who dwell below in the Depths. But Aria doesn't remember falling in love with Thomas; in fact, she wakes one day with huge gaps in her memory. And she can't conceive why her parents would have agreed to unite with the Fosters in the first place. Only when Aria meets Hunter, a gorgeous rebel mystic from the Depths, does she start to have glimmers of recollection-and to understand that he holds the key to unlocking her past. The choices she makes can save or doom the city-including herself.

My Review:
**3.5 Stars**

Ok, first ignore the promotions that say this book is for fans of Matched and The Hunger Games. The only thing it has in common with these books is the dystopian aspect - which is more sci-fi dystopian than Matched and The Hunger Games ever were. I heard a lot of mixed reviews about this book, and wasn't sure how I would like it. I think the main problem is that it was just marketed incorrectly. Mystic City is set in a magical dystopian New York City. But not fantasy magical - more sci-fi. I really did like the world the author created. It was probably the best part of the book.

Aria's character was... um... stupid. She kept doing things she knew were dangerous and not talking to the people she should have. Honestly, from page on I knew what happened between Aria and Thomas. It was very obvious. Hunter was a decent character. We really didn't get to see too much of him being him - it was more him saving Aria from whatever stupid thing she decided to do. I actually think Davida and Turk were my favorite characters and we don't see them that often.

I enjoyed the book and will be reading the next one. I would recommend it to sci-fi romance fans more than I would dystopian fans.

Review ~ Undeadly by Michele Vail

Undeadly (The Reaper Diaries #1)
by Michele Vail
YA Paranormal
Published November 20th 2012
Goodreads Link

Blurb:

The day I turned 16, my boyfriend-to-be died. I brought him back to life. Then things got a little weird...

Molly Bartolucci wants to blend in, date hottie Rick and keep her zombie-raising abilities on the down-low. Then the god Anubis chooses her to become a reaper-and she accidentally undoes the work of another reaper, Rath. Within days, she's shipped off to the Nekyia Academy, an elite boarding school that trains the best necromancers in the world. And her personal reaping tutor? Rath.

Live at Nekyia has its plusses. Molly has her own personal ghoul, for one. Rick followers her there out of the blue, for another... except, there's something a little off about him. When students at the academy start to die and Rath disappears, Molly starts to wonder if anything is as it seems. Only one thing is certain-Molly's got an undeadly knack for finding trouble...

My Review:
**2 Stars**

I was very disappointed in this book. I went into it expecting a great book based in Egyptian mythology. What I got was an annoying, self-centered main character whose main goal in life is to have Rick as her boyfriend.

There was little to no world building. Everything was kind of thrown at you and it didn't let you connect with the settings or the characters. I thought it was going to get better once Molly started going to Nekyia. But it actually got worse. Instead of building up the academy and its obvious rich background, information is just thrust at you and it is hard to absorb.

I gave the book 2 stars because it did have a lot of potential. The story was there, it just needed a lot of world building and better character development. I probably won't be reading the next one.

~ Authors are Rockstars ~ Featuring Cynthia Hand ~

I am excited to be apart of the Authors are Rock Stars Tour. I missed it last year, so signed up early this year. I was beyond excited when I learned that I would be able to do a Q&A session with one of my favorite authors ~ Cynthia Hand.

Cynthia grabbed my attention with her debut novel Unearthly. She wove a fantastic tale of angels (good and bad) and the troubles of being born of a human and angel. She continued her amazing series with Hallowed and then Boundless. Upon closing Boundless and finishing the series, my first thought was, "What now?" I wanted to read more by this author who sucked me right into her books and built a relationship between myself and her amazing characters.

Not only is Cynthia Hand an amazing author, she also teaches Creative Writing at Pepperdine University and other seminars throughout the year. I hope one day to be able to take part in one of her classes and learn from one of the best.

So, without further ado . . . I give you Cynthia Hand. . .

Interview:

1) How did you come up with the idea for the Unearthly trilogy?

The idea came to me mysteriously. I'd been going through a real dry spell, writing-wise. I'd been writing a literary novel for about five years, and not very excited about it, and not feeling like I wanted to read or write anything at all. Not a great place to be. Then one night I was sitting in the dark watching a movie with my husband, and the desire to write broke over me like a tidal wave. I don't know why - it just happened. Within 24 hours of that moment I was frantically writing down notes about this image I had in my head of a boy standing in front of a forest fire, and the lovely voice of a character chiming in about her purpose. And I started to do what writers naturally do: I asked questions. What would happen if you thought you had a singular purpose in life, but when the moment arrived, your heart took you in a different direction? What made this character special? Where was this forest fire going to happen? Then the pieces of the puzzle began to fall into place: Clara was part angel (and suddenly I was writing down the notes on the rules of this angel universe, the abilities of these part-angel people, the laws of heaven and hell, the powers of the angels, etc) and the fire would occur in Jackson Hole, Wyoming (and out of that came the characters of both Christian and Tucker-Christian representing the fire and polished side of Jackson and Tucker the rough-and-tumble cowboy part of Jackson) and the story almost began to write itself from there. It has been a wild and wonderful ride since then.

2) Do you have anything in the works that you can give us hints about?

I do! I have a short story coming in an anthology called STARRY EYED this fall. The book is a collection of real-life performers writing about their high school experiences in theater, dance, choir, and other performing arts, mixed with short stories written by YA authors like Kiersten White and Claudia Grey (and myself, of course). I had such a blast writing my story, "Stage Kiss," which is about a quiet 16-year-old soccer player who tries out for the school play in hopes of getting her first kiss from the boy who's always cast as the male lead. He's hot. She wants to kiss him. She gets into theater for all the wrong reasons, and it all goes wonderfully awry.

I also just sold a novel that would best be described as a contemporary stand-alone. That's about all I can say about it at this point, except that it will probably be out sometime in winter 2015 and I am working on it feverishly right now.

3) Totally objectively.... Team Christian or Team Tucker?

Ha. No way I can answer that. Both of them have their own qualities that make them right for Clara.

4) If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

Hmm. I love to travel, so this is tough. One place I've always wanted to go is Prince Edward Island, because I am such a huge Anne of Green Gables fan. I even played Anne in a community theater production of Anne of Green Gables in high school. I had to dye my hair red, and the first time I tried dying it, it turned out a horrible peeled-carrot orange.

5) If you could live in any fictional universe, what would it be and why?

Narnia. I just finished reading The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe to my son and was reminded again what a cool world that would be to wander around in.

6) How much research did you do on Angels before/during writing the Unearthly trilogy?

A bunch. I love research. I read tons of books and watched a collection of strange programs on the History Channel and Googled a lot of very odd search terms. I wanted to get a sense of angels, not just in the Christian tradition, but as they've been represented across different cultures. Then I cherry-picked the best or most useful details. The character of Samjeeza, for example, is a figure who has a very interesting mythology around him, which was fun to build upon.

7) Who are some authors who inspire you?

Wow, so many. I am a huge fan of Carrie Ryan, as her The Forest of Hands and Teeth was one of the first YA books I read that just blew the top of my head off. Currently I am also inspired by John Green, not only his novels, but the way he celebrates intelligence and passion-for-learning in teens and the way he tries to use his success and influence to make the world better.

8) What advice would you give to someone aspiring to be an author themselves?

Write what you love. So many of us, new writers and published authors alike, get caught up in trying to write what we think people want. But you have to love (and I mean passionately, fiercely love) what you write - you have to be on fire for it; otherwise no one else will be. Worry about publishing later. Write for yourself. Write to give shape to your dreams.

9) This is a question for Tucker ~ What's it like dating an Angel?

"Bright. Buy some sunglasses, is all I'm saying. And she can beat me at arm-wrestling. Which isn't fair. But she's handy to have around if I need a jar opened or if I'm randomly attacked by a grizzly."

10) Last question... Which one of your characters would you love to sit down and have a conversation with?

Maggie, Clara's mother. I love Maggie so much, and she's had such an interesting, rich life, that I would love to drink tea and talk about Pearl Harbor.

About Cynthia's Books:

Unearthly (Unearthly #1)
Published January 4th 2011

In the beginning, there's a boy standing in the trees . . . .
Clara Gardner has recently learned that she's part angel. Having angel blood run through her veins not only makes her smarter, stronger, and faster than humans (a word, she realizes, that no longer applies to her), but it means she has a purpose, something she was put on this earth to do. Figuring out what that is, though, isn't easy.

Her visions of a raging forest fire and an alluring stranger lead her to a new school in a new town. When she meets Christian, who turns out to be the boy of her dreams (literally), everything seems to fall into place and out of place at the same time. Because there's another guy, Tucker, who appeals to Clara's less angelic side.

As Clara tries to find her way in a world she no longer understands, she encounters unseen dangers and choices she never thought she'd have to make between honesty and deceit, love and duty, good and evil. When the fire from her vision finally ignites, will Clara be ready to face her destiny?

Unearthly is a moving tale of love and fate, and the struggle between following the rules and following your heart.

Hallowed (Unearthly #2)
Published January 17th 2012

For months Clara Gardner trained to face the fire from her visions, but she wasn't prepared for the choice she had to make that day. And in the aftermath, she discovered that nothing about being part angel is as straightforward as she thought.

Now, torn between her love for Tucker and her complicated feelings about the roles she and Christian seem destined to play in a world that is both dangerous and beautiful, Clara struggles with a shocking revelation: Someone she loves will die in a matter of months. With her future uncertain, the only thing Clara knows for sure is that the fire was just the beginning.

In this compelling sequel to Unearthly, Cynthia Hand captures the joy of first love, the anguish of loss, and the confusion of becoming who you are.

Radiant (Unearthly #2.5)
Published December 4th 2012

From New York Times bestselling author Cynthia Hand comes a riveting original novella (available only as an ebook) set in the world of the Unearthly series.

Clara is desperate to get away-from the memories that haunt her in Wyoming and the visions of a future she isn't ready to face-and spending the summer in Italy with her best friend, Angela, should be the perfect escape. . . .

For as long as she can remember, Angela has been told that love is dangerous, that she must always guard her heart. But when she met a mysterious guy in Italy two years ago she was determined to be with him, no matter the costs. Now she must decide whether she can trust Clara with her secret, or if telling her the truth will risk everything she cares about.

Alternating between Angela and Clara's perspectives, Radiant chronicles the unforgettable summer that will test the bounds of their friendship and change their lives forever.

Boundless (Unearthly #3)
Published January 22nd 2013

The past few years have held more surprises than part-angel Clara Gardner could ever have anticipated. Yet from the dizzying highs of first love, to the agonizing low of losing someone close to her, the one thing she can no longer deny is that she was never meant to live a normal life.

Since discovering the special role she plays among the other angel-bloods, Clara has been determined to protect Tucker Avery from the evil that follows her . . . even if it means breaking both their hearts. Leaving town seems like the best option, so she's headed back to California - and so is Christian Prescott, the irresistible boy from the vision that started her on this journey in the first place.

As Clara makes her way in a world that is frighteningly new, she discovers that the fallen angel who attacked her is watching her every move. And he's not the only one. . . . With the battle against the Black Wings looming, Clara knows she must finally fulfill her destiny. But it won't come without sacrifices and betrayal.

In the riveting finale of the Unearthly series, Clara must decide her fate once and for all.

Blurb:

After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin. Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors-from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king's council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she'll serve the kingdom for three years and then be granted her freedom.

Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilarating. But she's bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her... but it's the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.

Then one of the other contestants turns up dead... quickly followed by another.

Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.

My Review:
**4.5 Stars**

I was actually nervous about starting this book. So many people love it and I didn't want to be disappointed. Kind of like how a movie is built up by people, you are so excited to see it, then it doesn't meet your expectations - that. But I really really liked it.

I love how everyone is so afraid of Celaena. I want to read the prequels to get a better picture of how good she really was as an assassin. You hear that she was the best, but don't really get a good picture. I have a theory as to who she really is, but I guess I will have to wait for it to be confirmed. There are tons of hints - but nothing is outright stated.

Oh, Chaol. Stop being stupid and pursue Celaena! I really want the two of them to end up together. I just makes so much more sense than Celaena and Prince Dorian. I also hope to see a lot more of Princess Nehemia in the next book. She was fantastic and I love how she came through for Celaena when she really needed her - and vice versa.

I am glad I waited until closer to the next book's release date to read this one. I don't know how I could have waited a year.
